Overall, both tunnels had the same length, but Tunnel A was built earlier over a longer period at lower cost, while Tunnel B was constructed more quickly, at greater depth and cost, and with more lanes.
Looking at Tunnel A, it was 3.6 kilometers in length and situated at a depth of 1.5 meters underground, beneath a bridge, and on sandy soil. It took 12 years to construct two lanes for cars, from 1986 to 1998, at $555 million.
Regarding Tunnel B, it had the same length as Tunnel A, but it was built at a greater depth of 2.5 meters through stone and clay, underneath an existing road. The construction time was one-third of that of Tunnel A, between 2002 and 2006. Despite the shorter construction period, the cost was $1.1 billion, reflecting its larger three-lane design.
