Some people argue that low-cost air travel should be encouraged because it allows ordinary people to travel long distances, while others believe it exacerbates environmental problems and therefore should be restricted through higher prices. This essay will examine both perspectives before explaining why I believe affordable air travel should continue to be promoted, albeit with appropriate environmental measures.
On the one hand, opponents of budget air travel argue that its growing popularity poses a serious threat to the environment. As airfares become more affordable, the number of flights increases significantly, leading to a rise in carbon dioxide emissions. Aviation is already a major contributor to global warming, and excessive air traffic further worsens air pollution and climate change. Moreover, the deterioration of air quality negatively affects public health, particularly in urban areas, causing respiratory illnesses and reducing overall quality of life. From this perspective, imposing higher ticket prices could discourage unnecessary travel and help mitigate environmental damage.
On the other hand, the economic and social benefits of low-cost air travel are too substantial to ignore. Affordable flights facilitate international trade by enabling the rapid transportation of time-sensitive goods such as fresh agricultural products and medical supplies. This efficiency strengthens global supply chains and promotes economic growth. In addition, cheaper air travel plays a crucial role in boosting tourism, especially in remote or geographically isolated regions that are difficult to access by other means of transport. Increased tourist arrivals generate employment opportunities, improve local infrastructure, and raise living standards for residents in these areas.
In my opinion, while environmental concerns are valid, discouraging air travel through higher prices is not the most effective solution. Instead, governments should invest in cleaner aviation technologies, impose stricter emission regulations, and encourage airlines to adopt more sustainable practices. This balanced approach allows societies to continue enjoying the economic prosperity and social connectivity brought by air travel without neglecting environmental responsibilities.
In conclusion, although low-cost air travel contributes to environmental challenges, its role in promoting economic development, international trade, and tourism is far more significant. Therefore, rather than limiting its use through increased prices, efforts should focus on making air travel more sustainable in the long term.
