"Death is cruel, unjust, merciless." They always say something like this whenever they see me. The uncle in white says I only have two months left. I don't know why Mom cried at that. Grandpa passed away last year, and no one was this sad. But somehow it made Mom let me fly today. I love it up here, these gusts of wind. I spend hours talking to them, dancing with them. Clouds are like white cotton; I can't get over cuddling them and making cloud castles out of them. If only I could not go back.
Home isn't so fun anymore. Mom cries in hiding and gives a fake smile when she sees me. Dad started drinking again; he now buys me expensive things. But today, I'm back in the sky, flying amongst the clouds with my lovely parasol.
Someone is coming. Who is she? She looks beautiful. She is wearing a black gown and carrying a black umbrella. I've always wanted a black gown, but Mom only buys me purple and pink. She circled me three times and came near. My heart is pounding.
"Can I have your company?" she asked with a melodic tone, and I nodded in agreement without realising it.
We drifted with the wind, wherever our umbrellas took us. She broke the silence first. She shared how she and her father run a lovely park and how she guides the visitors. It's odd how she loves and hates her work at the same time. And I shared my story with her. It was different; she didn't give me that look of sorrow and pity like others do.
We flew until the sun touched the horizon, red with envy from our laughter. We nested in a tall tree and enjoyed the painting of dusk.
"Let's go. I have so many things to show you," she said with enthusiasm.
"But I don't even know you," I asked with genuine curiosity.
"What, you don't know me?" She giggled, and I turned red.
"You've known me silly, since the day you learned to ride your parasol. I was always with you," she replied with a smile that stretched from ear to ear.
I looked into her onyx eyes for a long time and muttered in a low voice,
"You aren't so bad as they say you are."
