At exactly 3:17 p.m., the clock in the town square stopped ticking. No one noticed at first. Cars moved through intersections, shop doors opened and closed, and conversations drifted through the afternoon air. Only Mrs. Alder, who sold flowers beneath the clock tower, sensed something unusual. The silence felt heavier, as if the world had taken a careful breath and forgotten to release it.
Within minutes, phones froze, screens flickered, and watches failed. Confusion spread quickly. Meetings paused mid-sentence. A bride stood motionless at the end of the aisle. Bread remained unburned in ovens that no longer counted seconds.
Yet something unexpected happened. Without schedules to chase, people looked at one another. Strangers spoke. Children laughed without being hurried indoors. Musicians carried their instruments outside and filled the square with unplanned melodies.
As the sun began to set, the clock suddenly shuddered and resumed its steady rhythm. Life rushed forward again, reclaiming its structure.
But for those few suspended hours, the town discovered that time does not only measure life — sometimes, it hides it.
