It was Michael’s first trip abroad. He packed his backpack, grabbed his toothbrush, kissed his mom goodbye and headed for the airport. He had no itinerary, no host to stay with, just a plane ticket to Vietnam and a dream. Some say he had a lot of courage to dare to do this. Some just say he was dumb. He thought he will stay in one small part of the world when he is dead in a cemetery. And he wasn’t ready for his grave just yet! He’s alive and he’s going to go see the world.
When he arrived he took a motorbike taxi to downtown Hanoi. The driver didn’t really take too much caution while driving him there. Either way, he was in Vietnam and still alive! He loved the city, the smells, the sights, the sounds…well, maybe not all the sounds. There was so much beeping! And why was it so hot he wondered. Everywhere he went he was covered in sweat and in the bathrooms there were no tissues, just a water hose. The locals didn’t really speak English, this was also quite burdensome for him.
Eventually he rented a motorbike and to adapt to the local life, but that same day he got into an accident and injured his leg. The next day, he was limping along the street with his phone in his hand checking his location, when a motorbike driver drove past him and snatched his phone. He hobbled after the guy but he couldn’t catch him. “I guess there is some danger here,” he thought. Michael was defeated, he was at a crossroads. He thought, he could go back home now, he would be ashamed but he wouldn’t have to take part in this madness anymore. He walked further down the street when the smell of delicious Pho broth cooking caught his nose. He sat down and ate the most delicious bowl of pho he had ever eaten. Just then he realized what the treasure was that he had been looking for. Michael could get a new phone, a new bike, even a new leg! Those things shouldn’t matter as much as a small, irreplaceable moment of having a bowl of Pho or receiving a nice smile from a stranger. Those little special moments are what life’s all about he thought…But damn, how will he pay for a new phone?
