Guinea is a West African country bordered by Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, Mali, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and the Atlantic Ocean. Its capital, Conakry, is located on the Atlantic coast and serves as the country's political and economic center. Guinea is rich in natural resources and holds some of the world's largest reserves of bauxite, the primary ore used to produce aluminum. The country also has significant deposits of gold, iron ore, and diamonds. Historically, Guinea was part of regional trading networks before becoming a French colony. It gained independence in 1958 and became the first French colony in sub-Saharan Africa to reject continued association with France through a national referendum.
