I've noticed that before I decide what kind of day I'm going to have, I often check everyone else's first. If someone I love wakes up irritated, I quietly postpone my own joy. If they're anxious, I begin preparing for a difficult day before anything has actually happened. It's almost as though I'm waiting for the emotional forecast from everyone around me before deciding how I'm allowed to feel. And I wonder how many of us do this without realizing it. We speak as though every day begins when we wake up, but perhaps for many of us, the day doesn't really begin until we've measured the emotional temperature of the people around us.
