In Paris, 28-year-old Dang Kien says it is the harshest summer since he moved to France three years ago. Previous heat waves usually lasted about a week with temperatures of 30-37 degrees, but this year, daytime highs have hovered around 39-40 degrees, with the heat index reaching about 42 degrees. Nighttime temperatures have remained above 20 degrees Celsius, creating "tropical nights" that have made sleeping difficult.
"The sun doesn't really go down until after 10 p.m., so I usually stay at the office until around 8 p.m. just for the air conditioning," Kien says. "But the crowded metro trains on the way home still gets me every time."
His experience reflects a challenge shared by millions across France. According to the International Energy Agency, only about 19% of European households have air conditioning. In France, the figure is estimated at just 3-5%.
