Niger is a large landlocked country in West Africa bordered by Algeria, Libya, Chad, Nigeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, and Mali. Its capital, Niamey, lies along the Niger River and serves as the country's political and economic center. Much of Niger is covered by the Sahara Desert, while the southern regions contain more fertile land that supports agriculture and most of the population. Historically, the area was connected to major trans Saharan trade routes and several powerful African kingdoms and empires. Niger became a French colony before gaining independence in 1960. Its economy relies on agriculture, livestock, mining, and regional trade, with uranium being one of its most important mineral resources. Niger has faced recurring political instability, drought, and security challenges that have complicated economic development. Despite these difficulties, its diverse communities maintain strong traditions shaped by centuries of trade, migration, pastoral life, and adaptation to demanding desert environments.
