The Republic of the Congo is a Central African country bordered by Gabon, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Angola. Its capital, Brazzaville, lies along the Congo River directly across from Kinshasa, the capital of the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo. France controlled the territory during the colonial period, and the country gained independence in 1960. Much of the northern region is covered by tropical rainforest within the vast Congo Basin, which supports exceptional biodiversity and stores enormous amounts of carbon. The economy relies heavily on oil production, which provides a large share of government revenue and exports. Forestry, mining, agriculture, and services also contribute to economic activity. Most of the population lives in the southern portion of the country, particularly around Brazzaville and the Atlantic port of Pointe-Noire. The Congo River and Atlantic coastline have historically supported transportation, trade, and regional connections.
