Yosemite National Park is one of the most famous natural areas in the United States. Located in California's Sierra Nevada mountains, the park is known for enormous granite cliffs, waterfalls, giant sequoia trees, and deep valleys shaped by ancient glaciers.
The heart of the park is Yosemite Valley. This relatively narrow valley is surrounded by some of Yosemite's most recognizable landmarks, including El Capitan and Half Dome. El Capitan is a massive granite wall that rises thousands of feet above the valley floor and attracts experienced rock climbers from around the world.
Yosemite is also famous for its waterfalls. Yosemite Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in North America, although the amount of water changes greatly throughout the year. Spring is usually the most impressive season because melting snow produces powerful flows. By late summer or autumn, some waterfalls may become much smaller.
Another important part of the park is Mariposa Grove, which contains hundreds of giant sequoias. These enormous trees can live for thousands of years and grow to remarkable sizes. Walking among them provides a completely different experience from the open views of Yosemite Valley.
Hiking opportunities range from short, easy walks to extremely demanding mountain routes. Visitors can walk to viewpoints, waterfalls, lakes, and high country areas. The climb toward Half Dome is one of the park's most famous challenges and requires significant preparation.
Wildlife includes black bears, mule deer, coyotes, bobcats, and many species of birds. Visitors must store food carefully because bears have learned to search cars, campsites, and other areas for anything that smells edible.
Weather and elevation vary greatly throughout Yosemite. The valley may be warm while higher mountain areas remain cold or covered with snow. Some roads also close seasonally.
Yosemite's greatest strength is the scale of its scenery. Giant granite walls rise almost vertically from the valley, waterfalls drop from high cliffs, and forests stretch toward distant mountains. Even after seeing countless photographs, standing inside Yosemite Valley can make the landscape feel much larger and more dramatic than expected.
