An engine works by converting the energy stored in fuel into controlled mechanical movement. Inside the cylinders, a mixture of air and fuel is drawn in as a piston moves downward. The piston then rises, compressing the mixture into a smaller space to make combustion more effective. At precisely timed intervals, a spark plug ignites the compressed mixture. The resulting expansion creates a rapid force that pushes the piston downward again. That movement is transferred to a crankshaft, which converts the piston's up-and-down motion into rotational energy capable of turning the vehicle's wheels. As this process repeats across multiple cylinders, valves open and close in carefully coordinated sequences to regulate airflow and exhaust. Fresh air enters, burned gases exit, and the cycle begins again within fractions of a second. Modern engines also rely on sensors and electronic systems to adjust fuel delivery, ignition timing, and performance based on changing conditions. Although driving often feels effortless from behind the steering wheel, hundreds of controlled explosions are occurring every minute, working together in remarkable synchronization to move the vehicle forward with efficiency and consistency.
