National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate Harivansh Narayan Singh was elected as the Rajya Sabha deputy Chairman on August 9, 2018 defeating the opposition's nominee BK Hariprasad. Harivansh, a veteran journalist representing Bihar as a member of Janta Dal United (JDU) in the Upper House received 125 votes as against 106 of Hariprasad. The current strength of the Rajya Sabha is 244 but the members present in the House were 230. The Aam Aadmi Party and YSR Congress abstained from voting. The position had fallen vacant following the retirement of P.J. Kurien in July this year. Harivansh Singh, 63 was born in Ballia (Uttar Pradesh). He graduated from Banaras Hindu University. He has post graduate degree in Economics and a Diploma in Journalism. He was associated with Jai Prakash Narayan, the renowned socialist who united opposition parties against Indira Gandhi's emergency rule. He has authored and edited several books in Hindi, especially on Bihar and Jharkhand. Governor's rule was imposed in Jammu and Kashmir and the J and K Legislative Assembly was kept under suspended animation on June 20, 2018 after the Bharatiya Janata Party and Peoples Democratic Party alliance collapsed, resulting in the fail of CM Mehbooba Mufti-led state government. The BJP withdrew its support to the PDP on June 19, leaving CM Mehboob's government in minority in the state assembly. The then Jammu and Kashmir Governor N.N. Vohra took charge of the administration of the state immediately after getting President Ram Nath Kovind's approval for the imposition of the Governor's rule in Jammu and Kashmir. Senior bureaucrat B.V.R. Subrahmanyam has been appointed Chief Secretary by the Governor B.B. Vyas and Vijay Kumar have been appointed Advisors to the Governor. It is for the fourth time that the sensitive border state was placed under Central rule in the last one decade- it under the tenure of Vohra, who was made the governor in June 2008. This is the eighth time in the last four decades that the state was put under govenor's rule. The results of Karnataka Assembly Polls - 2018 will declared on May 15, 2018 with a hung assembly situation in the state as no party got the absolute majority in the state assembly. The Bharatiya Janata Party emerged the single largest party in the assembly by winning 114 assembly seats out of 222 seats but could not secure absolute majority mark. The Congress Party remained on the second distant position in the assembly.
