Honesty is among the foremost virtues enjoined by religion on man. Society also places it very high. Honest persons are revered by society. Religion promises the a comfortable abode in heaven. Whether a man goes to heaven or whether he gets respect on earth is insignificant, when compared to the bliss of a mind at peace with itself. This is the greatest gift of honesty to an individual! Honesty makes the path of life smooth and safe. It is I this sense that honesty is considered its won reward.
There is an urge in some men to be dishonest. They always try to cheat and are even busy finding new ways of extracting money from others. They boast of their superior intellingence and never regard their deceitful nature as some thing evil. A business-man using a false measure or changing higher rates for his goods than the market permits, marvels at his success. Income-tax dodgers consider themselves very clever in evading the tax. The ticketless traveller relates is adventures with the ticket examiners with gusto. A regular cheat beguiles himself into the belief that society is responsible for the ill he is doing.
It is not always that dishonest people escape the rod of justice which ultimately falls on them. There is a saying that as the murder is out so is dishonest. There are stories about clever judges who succeeded in detecting the dishonest persons. The justice of Solomon in finding out the real mother and restoring her child to her is proverbial. The dishonesty barber who robbed a simple woodcutter of his pack-saddle was brought to book by the clever Khalifa. We be live that those who are not caught by worldly justice can not escape the inexhorable laws of nature. Instances of people coming to grief ultimately for their dishonesty are quite numberous.
