Human minds are slow to adjust to changing conditions. People are reluctant to give up on their old values. They accept reforms only under compelling circumstances. In India, even social revolt against traditional thought has always had a religious bias, but in the West it was motivated by rationalistic considerations. The gap between traditional and modern ways of life is difficult to bridge. We have to identify traditions which need to preserved and discard others, but it is difficult to identify these two types of traditions. Orthodoxy has always stood in the way of rational thinking. Even organised religion is based on rules. Intellectual thinking is, therefore, found to break the traditions in course of time.
Although, man has become insignificant before vast organisations, ultimately human minds are more important than lifeless plans made by machines. During the last 50 years, Western scientific inventions have increased use of sophisticated equipment and transformed our lives at an astounding speed. Propagation by the mass media has revolutionised human life and eroded old values related to time, family life, tradition and practices. Now merit, commitment, initiative and self-determination have assumed the greatest importance.
