Just sitting on the fence, so to speak, and not being sure which side you ought to step down on can be a strangely pleasant and a most disturbing experience at the same time, especially when it involves making a choice as to whether to own or whether not to own a pet Being reasonable, a person tries to see both sides of the ownership question before making a move toward wither side of the fence. For a long time, the person thas heard a great deal of talk as to the advantages and disadvantages of having a pet around the house and has managed to keep more or less calm though not even thinking twice about owning a dog, a cat, or some other animal. But then the day comes when the person sees someone with an especially personable, well-bred pet, and then the start of deliberate consideration hits him or her. In most instances, the person might then just as well forget all about being practical and objective about the pet ownership question: the instinct that is in people to protect animal, seems to be almost as strong as the instinct that is in most pets to please people and to please their masters or mistresses as no one else seems to want to do.
The major problem after obtaining a pet is, as you know from observation, on that centres around which one is to be master or mistress, the owner or the pet. Judging from what has been seen and heard, it would seem very probable that the pet is more often than not the boss of any household.
Many of the animals that people have domesticated to the point where they can safely be kept in or near the house soon learn that their masters or mistresses can be persuaded by gentle coaxing to perform any service that will satisfy every need and whim that they might have all through their lives, almost to the point of having their owners jump through hoops once in a while so as to give them a laugh, or whatever it might be that the animals do now and then.
