It is a rather large building. It is made of brick like many of the houses of that era. People hereabout still like to call it Convention Hall, and many of them remember that group of men who gathered here so long ago. As a matter of fact, it was really quite a while ago-about 170 years-and, it's funny, it doesn't really seem that long. There were quite a few of us to start with. The number dwindled, though. Some fell by the wayside as men will do. O six, seven times we must have almost quit the whole job. But we didn't. Thank God, we went on and we finished it and, no matter what we said then, we were all pretty proud of it. We called it a constitution-the Constitution of the United States. There were thirty-nine of us who signed our names that last day. No one was really satisfied, but we signed it. Once by one all thirty-nine of us went up and signed that Constitution. If you look at the original paper you'll see that there are only thirty-nine names on it. But there was another man there, a fortieth man, I didn't see him. I didn't hear him. But I knew he was there. He never did sign it. He just turned around and walked out with all the rest of us. I think he was more important than we thirty-nine who signed. We did our jobs in a few months or years and then passed on, but that fortieth man has been around all these years. He's always there to give that Constitution a boost. The American Constitution has lasted for nearly two hundred years, but oddly enough, when it was originally drawn up few people had very much faith in it. In Europe people laughed at it and said it couldn't work. And so they laughed and continued laughing until one day they suddenly realized that America and Americans had succeeded where the world had said they could not. They realized that perhaps they should not have laughed but should have followed. But even when they stopped laughing they could somehow just stand there waiting, waiting for something to go wrong, waiting for that Constitution, that nation, to fall.
