Mary sat on the floor of the boat, her feet braced against the rail and her fishing reel held tighly against her hip as she had seen experienced fisher-men do. The misty morning air brushed her hair against her cheek. Here she was on her first deep sea fishing expedition.
The four girls had left southern California and driven down to a little Mexican fishing village. It had once been a quiet place, but the tourists had brought many changes. Now there were modern motels, eating places, and businesses catering to the tourist crowds.
That night they had hone to bed early and were awake before the bell boy came knocking on their door to tell them that their fishing boat would be leaving at six. They donned their clothing, laughing at the romantic pictures they did not make in their heavy sweaters and big straw hats. After a hasty breakfast at a little lunch counter, they headed out to the pier, with box lunches tucked under their arms. There they rented fishing tackle. Mary had visions of the big fish she would bring home to show her ability as a fisherman, and she mentally posed for the inevitable picture showing her holding her big catch.
The boat was sixty feet long and was manned by a captain and two helpers, who assisted the squeamish girls in baiting their hooks. Anchovies, which are bright, shining fish a little larger than sardines, were used a bait.
The anchovies were kept in a container in the center of the boat. Finally all sixteen passengers and the crew of three were ready. Amid much joshing and laughter, several boats left at the same time. The engines made a throbbing roar as they headed toward the deep water. After about forty minutes, their captain stopped the engines and let the boat drift idly.
As though at a given signal, all passengers grabbed for the bait in an effort to be the first to get their lines in the water. Mary waited, for she had not the slightest idea of how to operate a rod and reel; and she did seem to be most fortunate in hitting rock bottom every time she cast.
