Modern India is one of the biggest democracies of the world with a very youthful and sincere Prime Minister at the helm of affairs. It is passing through a very critical phase of development, where no field, social, political or economic can be even slightly neglected. We need a total awakening, a total resurrection, and it is such an enormous task that we cannot even dream of completing it without the active participation of the youth. There are numerous evils corroding the very structure of the society. The International Decade for Women has failed to emancipate our women. Dowry is as rampant today as ever and brides continue to be maltreated and even burnt. There is no abatement in the incidence of child marriages and ill treatment of widows. Casteism, regionalism and narrow religious loyalties have not loosened their hold on our minds. Literacy ratio has not looked up. It is only the youth who can do something to remove these social evils. Old people brought up under a set of values based on obsolete customs will find it difficult to reject them. But the young can exercise objectivity, pick up the vital ingredients on which the foundations of a new nation can be raised and reject the dead dust. They can, thus, work to promote national integration and inculcate the values of democracy and secularism in the minds of the people. The challenges facing our youth in the political sphere are equally mighty. The entire political system is infected with opportunism, nepotism, corruption, deceptions, frauds and intrigues. Most of the Political parties are without any clearly visualised programmes of national reconstruction. Their leadership is in the hands of senile octogenarians, who, still hungry for power, refuse to relinquish their seats and make way for younger elements. The Prime Minister and accelerate the cleansing process. The youth can make a significant contribution in the economic field also. They can facilitate the implementation of various developmental programmes.
