Literature is the written record of thoughts in a language that is pleasing and stimulating. Thought is the natural reaction of the mind to the presence of external circumstances, or internal struggles. Since these reactions must bear the unmistakable impression of the age to which it belongs the intimate relationship between literature and the spirit of the age is obvious. The literature has to reflect the spirit of the age as embodied in the general situation and character of men and things belonging to that age. A writer describes or represents the life that he sees around him, but what he creates or criticises will be found to symbolise the spirit of the age.
Literature is certainly not a photographic representation of life nor the transcript of reality. It is life seen through the perspective of the artist. Thus, literature is not only an expression of life but also reflection of the personality of the writer. As a literary artist is not an isolated creature but the product of the generation and the age to which he belongs, he cannot be totally apart and divorce from it. That is why we find in the literature of today are audacious spirit of enquiry, impatience, freedom of sexes, the influence of science, the disillusionment caused by changing values of life, the rise of the common man, the indomitable spirit of youth.
The worth and excellence of literature is superior to that of life. It is the peculiar glory of literature that it lasts longer than life. When our lords and ladies pass into oblivion, the poet continues to enchant us with his music and poetry. He adds sweetness to life and stature to our civilization. Literature helps to keep man's mind healthy. It makes us forget the fever and the fret of life. It exists not only to please but also to lighten the burden of sins, disappointments and frustrations. It also arouses us into action. The force of literature is persuasive, slow but winning. Life is something dynamic. It has a forward-looking urge. Hence literature, so far as it reflects the spirit of an age, must be able to suggest this dynamic quality. Whenever literature fails to do so, it stands discredited. It follows that we cannot have a great literature in an age of little performance or a smug complacence.
