A fact of which we may well be proud is the glorious health enjoyed by the young men and women of this country. Our general standard of well-being is perhaps the highest in the whole world. Nor have we reason to be ashamed of our Public Health Services, which are second to none. In regard to housing, which is one of the most important of all the health services which a government can offer to its people, exceedingly good work has been done within recent years, and our record in this respect is without equal. Nevertheless, everyone will agree that many things remain to be done, for it is our intense desire to give to the men and women of this country, and especially to the young men and women every opportunity to keep fit.
Every town and city, large or small, must have its branch of the National Health Association, where boys and girls, and young men and young women, learn how to keep well and strong. God work has already been done, but we must remember that very recently the committee of this Association mentioned, in the course of a report, that after everything had been taken into consideration, it was probably true that 40 per cent of our young people take no active part in the work of this Association.
An old man who had for years been one of the best known figures in the world of music was asked by a youngman for an explanation of his success. He answered, "I have worked hard. If you work as hard as I have you will be no less successful". This reply is not in accordance with the popular view of the writer of beautiful music, for it is generally supposed that as a result of the possession of some wonderful gift, ideas come to him from outside without definite effort on his part. Another writer recently said that sometimes he will sit at the piano feeling nothing, wanting nothing. Then, just as in conversation one will get an entirely new idea without previous thought along those particular lines, so with music the idea comes when least expected. This idea will colour the whole work. Actually it is perhaps true that the idea comes from within but is brought to life by some outside influence.
