Meanwhile, Lakshmana stumbled through the forest, trying to find Rama and the deer. He ran through groves and clearings, slashing at creepers and vines, tripping over roots as he called out to his brother. Panting and out of breath, his mind teetered between his concern for Sita, whom he had left alone, and his fear for what had happened to Rama. But he ran on, his bow strapped to his shoulder. Suddenly, he saw Rama standing in a clearing, a twisted rakshasa body at his feet. 'Rama!' he cried. 'You're safe! What is this? Where's the deer?' Rama's sad eyes looked at him.
