In November 2012 I started the switch from QWERTY to Dvorak, and was using it exclusively after 2 months. I had peaked at 35 wpm in QWERTY. While painfully slow at first, my speed was 40 wpm after 4 months. Now 6 years later can attain 70 wpm.
I attribute at least some if this to the layout, which is very comfortable to type with (not so much awkward reaching and twisting of the fingers) --but also because of the disciplined approach I had to use in learning the layout and proper typing technique. Since my keyboard has only the QWERTY keys, I really had no choice but to learn to 'touch-type'.
