Last Saturday, I decided to spend the afternoon in New York City, although the weather looked unusually dark. I kept my umbrella close and walked toward an upscale area near the park. In my opinion, walking is one of the best ways to think clearly. Psychology, philosophy, and biology often seem like completely different subjects, yet they all ask questions about people, life, and the world. Near a square garden, I saw a squirrel squeeze through a thick hedge and disappear behind a brick wall. A child in a Spider-Man shirt pointed at it with great excitement. His father laughed and said the squirrel was probably looking for a pumpkin or a raspberry. The moment was simple, but it made the area feel hopeful and bright. Later, I stopped at a small café and opened a book about World War I, World War II, and the biological effects of disease during wartime. One section described how biologists studied polio and other illnesses. Another discussed the importance of inclusion, education, and scientific improvement after conflict. I definitely thought the chapter would be difficult, but the writer explained everything clearly. While I was reading, funk music played quietly in the background. Then a Kelly Clarkson song came on, which felt like an unusual change. I kept reading anyway. Before leaving, I practised a few typing sentences: improve, improved, improving, hope, hoping, hopeful, practice, practicing, ear, area, upper, and importance. By the time I reached home, the rain had stopped. I had not completely finished the book, but I had definitely finished enough for now, and that felt like a reasonable goal. I wrote one final note: progress is rarely dramatic; sometimes it is simply making fewer mistakes than you made yesterday morning.
