In 1932, Australia found itself in an unusual conflict later nicknamed the Great Emu War. After World War I, farmers in Western Australia struggled as large flocks of emus migrated inland, destroying crops and breaking through fencing meant to protect farmland. The government responded by sending soldiers armed with machine guns to reduce the population and protect agriculture. However, the operation quickly became chaotic. The emus were fast, scattered in unpredictable groups, and often outran or absorbed gunfire with little impact. In one encounter, the birds split into smaller groups, making them even harder to target. Despite military equipment and planning, the campaign failed to achieve meaningful results. Reports even noted that the emus seemed to adapt to the attacks by avoiding open formations. After limited success and public criticism, the operation was abandoned. Surprisingly, the emus remained largely unaffected, and farmers eventually turned to fencing and bounty systems instead. The event is now remembered as a rare instance in which wildlife effectively “won” against a military operation.
