The Kakori Conspiracy Case was instituted by the British government against 29 revolutionaries accused of being involved, directly of otherwise, in a daring train dacoity.
On 9 August 1925, 10 men stopped the ' 8 Down' train near the village of kakori (close to Lucknow). The train was carrying collections from various railway stations enroute, which were to be deposited at Lucknow.  
In a well-planned operation, the guard of the train was held at gunpoint, while shots were fired to keep the passengers inside their compartments. The iron safe in the guard's van was forced open, and the raiding party decamped with four thousand rupees in cash. The 10 young revolutionaries who participated in the dacoity were Ashfaqullah Khan, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Rajendra Lahiri, Sachindranath Sanyal, Manmathnath Gupta, Mukundilal, Kundanlal, Banwarilal, Murarilal and Ramprasad Bismil.
Within a month of the incident, 29 revolutionaries were arested for conspiring and perpetrating the act. More arrests followed, and in all about 43 people were rounded up. Eventually, list of 29 names was put up for trial before the special migstrate at Lucknow. Of these, three (including Chandra Shekhar Azad) remained absconding, while two turned approvers.  
The Kakori Conspiracy trial attracted a lot of public attention. Many leading lawyers came forward to defend the accused. The case continued for nearly 18 months.  
The final judgement was pronounced on 6 April 1927. Ramprasad Bismil, RAjendra Lahiri, and Thakur Roshan Singh were sentenced to death. Sachindranath Sanyal was given life imprisonment. Manmathnath Gupta was sentenced to 14 years' regorous imprisonment, while five others, including Jogesh Chatterji, were awarded 10 years each. Nine of the accused got five years' regorous imprisonment, two were acquitted, two turned approvers for the prosecution and two were pardoned. Some time later, Ashfaqullah Khan was also sentenced to death. The death sentences were finally carried out on 17 December 1947. Chandra Shekhar Azad remained unapprehended by the police, and died fighting on 27 February 1931.
