Thailand, which has the size of two Indian states, has little more than its crown jewel Bangkok, 40,000 temples and pleasure seeker's paradise Pattaya. Tamil Nadu alone has as many temples, including world heritage temples at Tanjore and Madurai, two of the best-known hill stations, Kodaikanal and Ooty, with beaches such as Marina and Mahabalipuram thrown in. These, along with Delhi and Dilwara, Khajuraho and Kaziranga, Ayurveda and yoga, and the Taj Mahal form a small part of a formidable list of world-class attractions in India.

And, yet, we have just a fourth of international tourists visiting India compared to Thailand. While five million Poles travel abroad, less than 50,000 are India-bound. Milan, with a cathedral and Leonardo da Vinci's mural 'the last supper', has nearly as many visitors as the whole of India. And, while a million tourists come here, 25 million Indians travel abroad, never mind that many have not seen a good part of our country. What is really going on and what should be done?

Orchha, the only temple in India where Lord Ram is in his princely form attracting enormous crowds, does not have a single decent public toilet. Delhi is dangerous for tourists and features below Medellin, the drug capital of Colombia, in the safety index for cities. Display of food even in metros is less hygienic than what is seen in bazaars in obscure Nakhon Pathom, a rural town in Thailand. Our foreign consulates are yet to build a sterling reputation for being helpful and knowledgeable. Can we address such issues, none of which requires monstrous investments?
