Before you can begin to determine what thecomposition of a particular paragraph will be, youmust first decide on an argument and a workingthesis statement for your paper. What is the mostimportant idea that you are trying to convey to yourreader? The information in each paragraph must berelated to that idea. In other words, your paragraphsshould remind your reader that there is a recurrentrelationship between your thesis and the informationin each paragraph. A working thesis functions like aseed from which your paper, and your ideas, willgrow. The whole process is an organic one anatural progression from a seed to a full-blown paperwhere there are direct, familial relationships betweenall of the ideas in the paper. The decision about what to put into your paragraphsbegins with the germination of a seed of ideas; this"germination process" is better known sbrainstorming. There are many techniques forbrainstorming; whichever one you choose, this stageof paragraph development cannot be skipped.Building paragraphs can be like building askyscraper: there must be a well-planned foundationthat supports what you are building.
