In this profession, experience also has not much importance because with every new boss, a Stenographer takes a new birth. In addition, a Stenographer has to cope with style of working of his boss. It is common feature that his boss is in a hurry because he has to go somewhere or has to attend some meeting but he also wants to dictate some thing important before he leaves the office. A worst position comes when he wants to sign the dictated matter before going out. In such a situation the officer dictates a matter of hours dictation in a few minutes. A Stenographer should have the capability of not only taking dictation but transcribing correctly, filling the gaps wherever necessary. A Stenographer is supposed to do whatever his boss wants. His duties are not defined in any Department. Sometimes he is to obey his boss against his conscience. Not to speak of performing duties like attending the call bells meant for the peon in case he is not available, arranging tea, coffee and what not for the guests like a loyal soldier. If a Stenographer slightly resists in obeying such instructions, his boss is displeased which a Stenographer can ill afford. A Stenographer does all this so-called official work sometimes even ignoring his own important domestic and personal work for which he requires leave from the office and which is generally denied to him. A survey reveals that the Stenographers are granted the minimum leave because of the nature of their duties. Stenographers are stamped as "Essential Service Men." Keeping in view the tough and undefined working conditions, the emoluments which a Stenographer gets are far from satisfactory.
