I firmly disagree with this notion, as I believe that these subjects are essential for the holistic development of children and can not be discarded simply because some students find them challenging.
Mathematics and philosophy play a crucial role in fostering important skills that are vital in today's society. Mathematics teachers how to think analytically and solve complex problems, which are essential skills in various professions, from engineering to economics. Similarly, philosophy encourages critical thinking and the ability to view issues from multiple perspectives, thereby preparing students to navigate societal challenges effectively. Making these subjects optional undermines their significance in a well-rounded education.
Furthermore, making challenging subjects optional can lead to disparity in educational opportunities among students. children from different backgrounds may choose to avoid subjects they find different, resulting in a lack of essential knowledge and skills that are vital for higher education and the job market. A universal curriculum that includes these subjects ensures that all students, regardless of their individual capabilities, receive the same foundational knowledge and opportunities for future success.
