Belize is a small country on the eastern coast of Central America, bordered by Mexico, Guatemala, and the Caribbean Sea. It is the only country in the region where English is the official language, a legacy of British colonial rule. Formerly known as British Honduras, Belize gained independence in 1981. The country is known for its rich biodiversity, with lush rainforests, hundreds of cayes, and the second-largest barrier reef in the world. Belize is home to a mix of cultures, including Creole, Maya, Garifuna, Mestizo, and others, making it one of the most culturally diverse nations in the Americas. Tourism plays a major role in the economy, along with agriculture and fishing. Ancient Maya ruins like Caracol and Lamanai attract visitors from around the world. Despite its small size, Belize is known for its relaxed pace, friendly atmosphere, and natural beauty both above and below the waterline.
