Suriname is the smallest country in South America, located on the continent’s northern coast. It is bordered by Guyana to the west, French Guiana to the east, Brazil to the south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the north. A former Dutch colony, Suriname gained independence in 1975, and Dutch remains its official language, making it unique in the region. The capital, Paramaribo, is known for its colonial wooden buildings and diverse cultural life. Suriname’s population is one of the most ethnically diverse in South America, with communities of Indigenous peoples, Africans, Indians, Javanese, Chinese, and Europeans contributing to its traditions and cuisine. Much of the country is covered by tropical rainforest, which supports incredible biodiversity. Gold and oil are major exports, while ecotourism is slowly growing. Despite its small size, Suriname stands out for its cultural blend, natural beauty, and role as a bridge between the Caribbean and South America.
