I believe that history should be made a compulsory course in high school because history serves as a window to the past, enabling students to understand the roots of society, the evolution of cultures, and the forces that have shaped the world we live in today. Andrew’s point about biology is valid as it has clear practical applications in daily life. However, history offers a different but equally essential dimension. By studying history, students can learn from the successes and mistakes of previous generations. It provides insights into the causes of conflicts, the mechanisms of social change, and the development of political systems. This knowledge is fundamental for informed citizenship, as it equips students to analyze current issues, make rational decisions, and contribute meaningfully to society. Moreover, history nurtures critical thinking, research skills, and an appreciation for diverse perspectives, which are invaluable assets in any field of study or future career path. Unlike biology which focuses more on the natural world, history broadens students’ understanding of the human experience in all its complexity, making it a crucial subject that should be compulsory for high school students.
