There are many evil practices prevalent in the society, mainly dowry system, child marriage, casteism, gender discrimination, women oppression, and superstition, which flourish due to poverty, illiteracy and conservative thinking and give rise to serious problems like female foeticide, domestic violence; education and public awareness campaigns are necessary to remove these.
Major social evils:
Dowry system: Demand for money and property from the bride's side by the groom's side at the time of marriage, which leads to exploitation.
Child marriage: Marrying children, especially girls, at an early age, which affects their future and health.
Racism and Discrimination: Social inequality and a sense of superiority and inferiority, leading to divisions in society,
Women's oppression: Violence against women, domestic violence, and denial of equal rights.
Female foeticide: Killing of a foetus in the womb due to fear of having a girl child, which creates gender imbalance.
Superstition and conservatism: Practices based on irrational beliefs, such as the practice of Sati (now banned), which make life difficult for women.
Drug abuse and alcoholism: harmful to both the individual and society.
The reasons for these malpractices:
Poverty and illiteracy: These are the root causes of social evils, which prevent people from understanding the difference between right and wrong.
Patriarchal thinking: Underestimating and suppressing women compared to men.
Old traditions: False beliefs that have been prevalent for centuries, which are given the name of religion or culture.
Solutions:
Spread of education: Quality education brings awareness among the people.
Awareness campaign: Educating people about the harms of these evils through public meetings, pamphlets and campaigns.
Stringent laws and their enforcement: Strict enforcement of laws such as the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.
Employment opportunities: Reduction in poverty and unemployment leads to reduction in social evils.
Social reformers (like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Sant Kabir) have raised their voice against these evils, and even today we should try to eradicate them through awareness and education.
