I find it quite difficult to find long texts for typing practice in the text list on the 10fingerfast.com website. There are a few that are long, with a total of more than 500 words, and some that are more than 700 words. However, there are only a few of these. When I want to return to typing, I have to find a minimum of 500 words so that my typing habits and endurance continue to improve. Another important thing is to improve the reflexes of my fingers and my memory of the layout of the keys so that they become smoother and more accurate. For this reason, I created this text myself, because when I found the total number of words I wanted, I only found the same text to type again. On the other hand, I read texts that I have typed, which are about confessions, short stories, and even copied news articles. Therefore, I create my own typing texts, not only as practice, but also because I cannot find any other texts with more than 500 words. This way, I am free to type up to 1000 words for practice. On the other hand, typing by creating my own text doesn't feel long and tedious, but when I look at the word and character count report in the lower right corner of the writer window, it turns out that I have reached 1000 words. I think this will be fun for advanced typing practice. Coupled with the habit of retyping from reading news or any script, then creating it into a different text, or even purely writing down ideas and concerns in my head. In addition to measuring speed and accuracy, this can also improve concentration and word selection from the vocabulary gained from frequent reading. On the other hand, such activities make typing 1000 words or even pages feel effortless.
Learning to type is an activity that requires patience and consistency from a person. Without these two things, mastering 10-finger typing is impossible. In fact, the ability to type quickly is considered an urgent matter for a person in this day and age. The ability to type with 10 fingers will increase speed, accuracy, and time efficiency. In addition, this ability can also support a person's productivity, both in the world of education and work.
For example, in the world of education, students must master typing skills. It is not enough to simply be able to type using two index fingers, which is often the case. The importance of being able to type with ten fingers for students will affect their efficiency in completing college assignments, whether in the form of organizational activities or basic college assignments.
Unfortunately, this skill is starting to fade among today's students. Only a handful of them are able to type ideally, and the rest have 11-finger typing skills (two index fingers). Seeing this, there is a suspicion that the prevalence of plagiarism in higher education is due to minimal typing skills. This leads to the practical idea of copy-pasting. Even when it comes to paraphrasing, which is rewriting a sentence using different words but with the same meaning, students find it difficult.
The question then arises: why is typing ability something that needs to be considered? The reason is clear and simple: with ideal typing skills, a person can write quickly without having to rely on copy-paste. This point may not be very strong, but a person with ideal typing skills is accustomed to typing and reading. This is what can have a significant impact. With the habit of typing and reading, the vocabulary in their mind becomes richer and it becomes easier to compose different sentences with the same meaning that are easy for readers to understand.
Standardizing typing skills should be a requirement before someone enters higher education. In reality, this small matter is often overlooked and even completely ignored. For example, college entrance exams are not only tests of academic ability, but also typing tests that can determine whether a person is fit to enter the academic world, which is closely related to anti-plagiarism ethics. Prospective students are given a typing test with a minimum standard of 40 characters per minute (KPM/WPM). Why is this standard important? At this speed, at least someone can type at an average speed and is likely to be able to withstand typing activities that are common in various learning and research activities for students.
Given the minimal typing skills of students today, it is no wonder that plagiarism is rampant. With standardized typing skills, it will at least be easier for teachers/lecturers to guide students towards anti-plagiarism. For example, in the first to third semesters, students' assignments are to summarize lectures, learning resources, and comment on phenomena based on strong scientific sources. This activity can stimulate students' writing and research skills to be developed in the following semesters, up to the final assignment, which is the goal. It is better than simply giving paper assignments that will lead to plagiarism and copy-pasting from the abundant sources available on the internet.
Concerns about plagiarism are a serious matter that must be addressed by the academic world in Indonesia. Not a few students who graduate with a bachelor's degree know what they are doing and what they are researching. This even continues to the master's level (S2). It is often found that theses are of the same quality as undergraduate theses, or even lower, which are merely papers with the addition of research embellishments. Today, this practice has spread to a level where it should not be done, namely writing scientific journals. What happens next? The continuation of the habit of plagiarism and rushing to finish means that more and more scientific journals cannot be used as a basis for research and the continuation of that research.
Outside of campus, this creates a wider gap between the needs of society and what is being researched on campus. It is no wonder that many say that what you learn on campus will be very different when you enter society and the workforce. This happens because there is no synchronization between academic research and real-world problems, especially since the research results cannot be continued due to weaknesses in their composition. This causes every student who is about to complete their final project to search for a research title, and when they are stuck because they are pressed for time, they simply take one from the internet and change the research location without mentioning that what they have compiled is a continuation of previous research.
The reasoning behind this has not yet reached today's students, especially when we consider that the root cause is that they do not have ideal typing skills on average. The practical habits and plagiarism that have been built since they first set foot on campus result in plagiarized work at the end of their studies. In this case, we also reflect that the task of learning is not just about quantity, but about the quality of the purpose of learning. It is not learning if it has strayed from its core spirit.
