I was a musician in the symphonic wind ensemble many years ago, and when I needed to learn a new piece on of music that was particularly challenging, I would break it down into much smaller pieces and practice each of the pieces individually. Often I would use a metronome, playing the passage at a fraction of the original speed. It was often slow, but consistent, and I was able to see and measure improvement.

Now that I am an aspiring author, I need to be able to reach a daily word count. To be able to do this in a reasonable amount of time, I need to drastically increase my words per minute. In order to be able to increase speed, I also need to increase accuracy.

Typing in bursts of speed with words and that I know well was great, but it was at the expense of the words that I struggled with. The overall effect was a mediocre output.

Typing as fast as I could only got me so far, so I decided that in order to increase accuracy, needed to slow down, at least for now, and be accurate on everithing. Once I get up the accuracy, then I can slowly increase the speed. To help this along, I found an online metronome, pressing one key per click.

While extremely awkard at times, it has helped to smooth out things, and I only use it some of the time. I am though seeing improvement over time, as my fingers often seem to work on their own. This may work for you as well.
